Aericon | How to get your business or startup free PR

January 14, 2013

Want to get your business or startup free PR? You aren?t going to get it by writing press releases ? no matter how social pr 2.0 you write them. Press releases are still good for certain things ? but if you aren?t well known there are better ways to connect with influencers in media.

  1. Find the top bloggers in your niche or industry
  2. Subscribe to their email alerts or RSS feeds
  3. Read them over several weeks, get a sense of what they are interested in, writing style
  4. Send them useful links that have nothing to do with your business
  5. Promote their content on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn ? but don?t overdue it, don?t want to look like a stalker
  6. Imitate their writing style and tone when promoting or communicating with them (they will think you are cool)
  7. Keep track of events they will be attending or even webinars where there could be Q&A ? try to meet them but still don?t mention your business
  8. If you know someone important or famous introduce them

Once you have properly aged the relationship and are no longer a stranger try sending a short note (emphasis on ?short?). Tell them because they are so special you want to share your product announcement, event info, whatever it is with them before anyone else in the world. These are journalists ? they want to write exclusive content not to reblog second hand news.

I think this goes into a new category of Dale Carnegie style personal development ? maybe HTMFIP 2.0 (How to Make Friends and Influence People 2.0).
