Ted Cruz Takes On Chuck Hagel - Business Insider

The Senate's interrogation of Chuck Hagel went from bad to worse on Thursday, when newly-elected Texas Sen. Ted Cruz laid into Obama's Defense Secretary nominee with some bogus visual aids.?

In an unorthodox move, Cruz streamed a 2009 call-in interview Hagel gave to Al Jazeera in front of the hearing, in an attempt to show that Hagel had agreed with callers' statements that the Israel had committed "war crimes" in Lebanon and the U.S. is "the world's bully."?

Watch the clip below, courtesy of Talking Points Memo:?

?

As BuzzFeed's Rosie Gray points out, the first clip, on "war crimes," was actually taken way out of context. Cruz did not play Hagel's full response to the caller, who referred to "war crimes" as part of a much longer diatribe that ended in a question about U.S. moral leadership.?

Here's the full interview:?

The second clip, which has come up often in criticism of Hagel, is only slightly more legitimate. In that clip, a caller asks whether the U.S. needs to change the "perception" that it is "the world's bully," to which Hagel responds: "Well, her observation is a good one and it's relevant. Yes to her question."?

Overall, Cruz's questioning was a low point in what has so far been a rocky confirmation hearing for Hagel. The former Nebraska Senator has struggled to defend his previous positions on Iran, as well as past statements about Israel and the "Jewish lobby."

Foreign Policy's Josh Rogin reports that additional Republican Senators have decided to vote against Hagel's confirmation in light of his testimony today. But Hagel still has the support of Senate Democrats, and it is unlikely that Republicans will decide to filibuster his confirmation.?

Rossen Reports: Feds target fake Super Bowl merchandise

As New Orleans gears up for Sunday's Super Bowl, the city has become flooded with fans who are buying all the souvenirs they can. NBC's Jeff Rossen joins a team of federal investigators on the hunt for NFL counterfeits, which can be used to generate money for major crimes.

By Jeff Rossen, NBC News

It's a multimillion-dollar criminal enterprise now in full force at the Super Bowl.

New Orleans is flooded with fans buying up anything they can, from Super Bowl hats to jerseys. But some of it is fake.

"So what?" you may say; "I'm still getting a shirt." But officials say some of the money from fake Super Bowl merchandise is funding major crimes. We went out with a team of federal investigators from the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement on the hunt for NFL counterfeits, hitting store after store, finding fake after fake after fake: merchandise that looks so real, even the experts have to look twice.

Have an idea for Rossen Reports? Email us by clicking here!

"Why should the average person at home care about this?" we asked John Schmidt, a field supervisor for the Department of Homeland Security.

"The proceeds from the sale of these items support criminal enterprises like gangs, drug organizations, underground networks," Schmidt told us.

And investigators say the criminals are getting better at fooling you. We found hats and jerseys with the NFL logo all over them -- even the official-looking NFL hologram.

That was fake, too. "It's just a shiny piece of paper," Schmidt explained.

Rossen Reports: Tricky thieves target stores

Most of the counterfeit merchandise is shipped in from China. Officials try to stop it at the ports, but they can't keep up. At one store, officials seized three dozen counterfeit jerseys. We had some questions for the store manager.

"Do you feel bad about selling counterfeit goods?" we asked.

"Of course, but this is the first time I know those jerseys are counterfeit," the manager said.

So why was he selling them way under market price? "The price is too low," said Trey Lund, assistant special agent in charge for Homeland Security. "You know, they?re selling these for $49.99. The official Nike jerseys, the real ones, run right around $250."

We called the store owner. He never got back to us.

Read more investigative journalism from Rossen Reports

At another store, investigators confiscated more jerseys and hats. The owner told us he had no idea they were fakes.

"Where did you get these hats?" we asked the owner.

"Just a guy come around and sell them."

"Does that sound like legitimate NFL? a guy coming around and selling them?"

"That's correct," the owner said. "But I don't know."

Rossen Reports: New device lets crooks crack many hotel locks

But investigators said the next store we visited knew. The owner tried to pull a fast one, denying he had any jerseys. But when they searched behind the counter, it was a different story.

"What does that tell you?" we asked.

"That he knows it's illegal and he knows that it's wrong," the investigator said.

The owner said he's sorry and these stores all got warnings. But in some cases, prosecutors file criminal charges. "If they're perpetuating this sort of criminal activity, we're not going to give up until we find them," said Ray Parmer, special agent in charge, Homeland Security.

This season alone, the NFL has seized more than $13 million in fake merchandise. And it's not just stores. On Thursday the federal government will announce that they're shutting down more than 300 websites that were selling counterfeit NFL clothing.

So how do you protect yourself? These criminals are smart, but they can't seem to get the stitching down. The stitching in real NFL jerseys is flawless. When you buy a jersey, turn it inside out. If the stitching is sloppy, it likely may be a fake.

One FC?s Peter Davis is a fighter, model, actor and a ?Hot Guy Who Cooks?

Peter Davis is a model, actor, and has worked in finance. He also once worked in finance, and appeared on an Asian television show called, "Hot Guys Who Cook." In addition to those roles, Davis will take his 5-1 record to One FC 7 this weekend, where he will fight Leo Krishna in Kuala Lumpur.

Davis said that fighting, acting and modeling are not as different as you would think.

"I'm in entertainment. In modeling, acting, film, and sometimes I do fighting," Davis told Cagewriter. "It's a bit of a strange thing to do, considering modeling and acting but it's still all entertainment."

He has had runway shows and commercial shoots after fights. When he told agents about fights, they rarely understood what MMA entailed. He has been asked if he wore headgear to fights.

"The agencies are usually quite concerned when I say I'm going to fight. Headgear? Kind of?"

He describes his style of fighting as unorthodox, comparing it to Lyoto Machida.

"If they're looking at me, and they're looking at my fighting style, it's just not very orthodox. I end up with lots of options with my striking. My ground game is quite reasonable. I can roll with brown belts and purple belts, but I'm a stand-up fighter who has the power to knock people out."

Being elusive helps him from getting too beat up in the face, which helps with modeling.

"It's really the modeling style," Davis joked.

The son of a British man and Malaysian woman, Davis started fighting in 2004 in the UK, but retired in 2006. He continued to train, but didn't fight again until the MMA scene heated up in Malaysia, where he now lives. Now, he fights to test himself and see where the fight world will take him.

"I want to see that what I know does work, but to win a title belt would be nice. That would be amazing. It's such a huge event. After that, I don't know what I'd like to do. Whether it's acting, modeling or fighting. I don't want a long and arduous career of being punched in the face. I'd like to do more fights, maybe get a title belt and see where it takes me."

This weekend, it means a bout with Leo Krishna at One FC 7. Check out pay-per-view information here.

Simon Arias Electrifies at American Income Life Leadership ...

?

Simon Arias - American Income Life SGA

Simon Arias ? American Income Life SGA

Simon Arias,?American Income Life?s reigning SGA of the Year,?didn?t?spend the minutes leading up to his first speech reading over notes, nor did he spend it rehearsing the message he was about to impart on more than 130 future AIL leaders.

Rather, he spent the final minutes before his heavily anticipated appearance at #AILLA101?signing autographs, taking photos with attendees, and flying through the filled-to-capacity Conference Center in a?Tasmanian?Devil-like explosion of high fives, hugs, and even a detailed secret handshake or two.

As Scott Smith, President and CMO of AIL, introduced Simon to the #AILLA101 attendees, he recognized Simon?s undeniable celebrity-status at AIL ? but Scott made clear how that status came to be: through unstoppable drive, overflowing passion, and month-after-month consistency that set the bar for high-level management performance.

Calling AIL the Company that ?helped me turn from a boy to a man,? Simon spoke of the privilege he felt in addressing the next generation of American Income Life leaders. Following that brief moment of sentimentality, Simon unleashed an hour-long speech touching on the power of positive thinking, the need to invest in oneself, and the idea of perpetual self-improvement, both personally and professionally.

?My goal is to write one million per week,? Simon said with a fiery passion, along the way asking attendees of their personal vision. ?One million per week,? he repeated ? ?I?m SPEAKING IT into existence!?

American Income Life SGA Simon Arias giving high fives before his speech at Leadership Academy 101

American Income Life SGA Simon Arias giving high fives before his speech at Leadership Academy 101

How does he plan on reaching that goal? The same way all the greats throughout history have met their goals ? by overcoming negative thought; by working on themselves; by taking control of their own destiny.

?To overcome negative thought,? Simon says, ?is to enter into a lifetime of POWER. If you invest in yourself, things around you will change,? Simon, living proof, insisted. ?There are 168 hours in a week ? spend seven of those hours on strengthening your mind, body, and spirit,? he said, whether that means running on the treadmill, reading inspirational words, or letting loved ones know how much you care. ?Don?t tell yourself you don?t have time for these things,? Simon says. ?Don?t become a slave to your negative thoughts.?

Simon spoke of the aggressive drive he applies to recruiting and Agency building, and how that no-holds-barred attitude is rooted in his past. While his past is surely unique, having grown up in an impoverished and dangerous neighborhood, it surely doesn?t make Simon ?special? (no more special than the average AIL Agent, at least) ? it simply provided him that extra bit of passion that, as he says, ?separates the champions from the chickens.?

For some, that drive may be rooted in past failures; for others, it?s rooted in future promises. Wherever its source, you must take hold of the expectations you?ve set for yourselves and move them to the forefront of your priorities. If you do, success will come, both at American Income Life and in your own life.

?We?re all going to feel either the pain of discipline, or the pain of disappointment ? well, it?s your decision; choose your pain,? says the 29-year-old Pennsylvania-based wunderkind.

After Simon?s first of two speeches at #AILLA101, the decision for all 130+ attendees was an easy one.

How are YOU investing in yourself, both personally and professionally?

Hostess set to announce bidder for Twinkies

(AP) ? The indestructible Twinkie appears to be one step closer to a comeback.

Hostess Brands is close to announcing that it has picked two investment firms ? C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management ? as the lead bidders for its Twinkies and other snack cakes, according to a source close to the situation who was not authorized to comment publicly on the talks.

The joint "stalking horse" bid would set the floor for an auction process that lets competitors make better offers. A judge would have to approve any final sale.

After years of management turmoil and turnover, Hostess declared it was going out of business and selling its brands in November. The company, based in Irving, Texas, has already announced separate lead bidders for its other brands. McKee Foods, which makes Little Debbie snack cakes, was picked as the lead bidder for Drake's cakes, which include Devil Dogs, Funny Bones and Yodels.

Flowers Foods, which makes Tastykakes and a variety of breads, was picked as the lead bidder for six of Hostess' major bread brands, including Wonder.

United States Bakery Inc. was picked as the lead bidder for a number of smaller bread brands.

Citing sources close to the situation it did not name, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the offer for Twinkies and other snack cakes by C. Dean Metropoulos and Apollo would be for more than $400 million. The report said that the deal could be disclosed as early as Tuesday. C. Dean Metropoulos owns Pabst Brewing Co.

A representative for Apollo declined to comment. A representative for C. Dean Metropoulos did not return calls for comment.

Hostess has stressed in bankruptcy proceedings that it needs to move quickly in the sale of its brands to capitalize on the outpouring of nostalgia and media coverage prompted by its demise. The longer the cakes and breads are off shelves, the more people will become accustomed to eating cakes and breads by rivals, the company has said.

Tiny Feathered Dinosaur Discovered

Researchers have discovered a new species of feathered but flightless little dinosaur from the Jurassic period.

Remains of the tiny beast, dubbed Eosinopteryx brevipenna, found in northeastern China suggest it was slightly less than a foot long (30 centimeters) and had a short snout and a short tail. Based on the dinosaur's small wingspan and bone structure, researchers believe it would have been able to run around quite easily, but likely couldn't whip up enough of a wing-beat to fly. The dinosaur also sported toes that would have been suitable for walking along the ground, the researchers added.

This birdlike dinosaur's plumage was much more reduced compared with the feathers on some of its contemporaries, which suggests that feathering was already diversified by the Late Jurassic, adapted to different ecological niches and purposes, the researchers said. (The Jurassic period lasted from about 199.6 million to 145.5 million years ago.)

"This discovery sheds further doubt on the theory that the famous fossil Archaeopteryx ? or 'first bird' as it is sometimes referred to ? was pivotal in the evolution of modern birds," researcher Gareth Dyke, a senior lecturer in paleontology at the U.K.'s University of Southampton, said in a statement.

"Our findings suggest that the origin of flight was much more complex than previously thought."

Archaeopteryx was long thought by many to have been the earliest bird. Discovered in 1860 in Germany, it is sometimes referred to as Urvogel, the German word for "original bird" or "first bird." But recent findings suggest late-stage Jurassic Archaeopteryx was actually just a relative of the lineage that ultimately gave rise to birds.

The new research was detailed in the Jan. 22 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

As Android rises, Asia's trend-setters show signs of iPhone fatigue

1 hr.

SINGAPORE?? Apple's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore ? iPad and iPhone ? declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Leading indicators
Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory?that's developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast ? consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK.

Android rising
Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore, they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting ? Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users ? 20-something college students and fresh graduates ? said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Standing out from the crowd
Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits ? watching video, writing Chinese characters ? while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5, ?but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

Shifting trends
To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget, but now more and more people use it," Hadipratomo said.

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region, and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea, so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

This report was written by Jeremy Wagstaff in Singapore, with additional reporting by Lee Chyen Yee in Hong Kong, Khettiya Jittapong and Amy Sawitta Lefevre in Bangkok, and Andjarsari Paramaditha in Jakarta.

Activists cautiously welcome immigration reform push

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Proposed changes to immigration law unveiled on Monday could be the answer to the prayers of illegal immigrants like Maria Duran, but she is waiting to see the details.

A bipartisan group of Republican and Democrat senators announced "tough but fair" steps that they hoped could be passed by Congress this year to give 11 million illegal immigrants a chance to eventually become American citizens.

Activists like Duran, who sat up all night with others at a prayer vigil for immigration reform outside the capitol building in Phoenix, Arizona, were pleased but cautious.

"It's the best moment for immigration reform in years, but we need to see more details," said the 50-year-old homemaker, who left Mexico to live in the United States 28 years ago, but still does not have legal status.

The proposed steps are part of the first concerted drive for comprehensive immigration reform since a similar overhaul was defeated by Republicans in Congress in 2007.

It would offer probationary legal status to immigrants who register with the government and pay a fine and any back taxes.

They will also have to learn English, continue to pay taxes and demonstrate a work history in the United States to apply for legal permanent residency.

However, many of the details still need to be worked out and the proposal also seeks to ensure as a first step that the porous border with Mexico is secure and that foreigners in the United States temporarily return home when their visas expire.

Some activists were encouraged by the level of bipartisan support from the four Democrat and four Republican senators who put forward the proposal. They include Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, and John McCain, a veteran Arizona Republican.

But they also worried that the proposal made tightening enforcement - including adding agents and surveillance systems to the southwestern border - a precondition for all other measures in the package.

"It's really heavy on enforcement. That has always been one of the wedge issues in the community for activists," said Gaby Pacheco, a campaigner in Florida who was brought to the United States from Ecuador at the age of eight.

While the government's own figures showed arrests on the southwest border at a 40-year low in 2011 and deportations at a record high, Pacheco said, "I don't think Republicans are ever going to be satisfied with enforcement measures."

'AMNESTY' OR 'EARNESTY'?

For Juana Garcia, a 27-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico working in agriculture, reform could ease the fear she and her husband have of deportation and being separated from their five children - all of whom were born in the United States and therefore have citizenship.

The pair are seasonal workers who drive to Wisconsin to work the crops there before returning to Florida's strawberry fields and orange groves - all the while worried that they will be pulled over for a traffic stop and detained.

Garcia, speaking in Spanish, said she has no problem with provisions requiring immigrants to pay fines and back taxes before getting a green card. But she said that while immigrants want to learn English, they may need help finding time or child care to attend classes after laboring in the fields all day.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, a Republican whose support for her state's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants in 2010 made her a major White House antagonist on the issue, gave the proposal a cautious welcome.

"I am pleased that there is expressed recognition of what we have been saying in Arizona: immigration reform will not succeed unless and until we have achieved effective border security," Brewer said in a statement.

However, it met with a decidedly mixed response from other Republican leaders nationally, who said that while they supported some kind of immigration overhaul, they were unclear if this was the right one.

"My understanding is it's basically just saying that we're going to give everybody amnesty," said Steve Munisteri, chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.

"But we do need immigration reform that recognizes the fact that we have a lot of people already here, that are necessary to be here, that are hard-working, law-abiding people that would add to the country," he added. "We should figure out a way for those people to have a way to stay."

Some others in the party, which lost Hispanic votes in the November election that gave President Barack Obama a second term, saw support for the measure as way of building bridges to Latinos, who are the country's fastest-growing ethnic group.

"There's no question about it. We've got to deliver a better message to Hispanics and immigrants ... a segment of people we lost badly," said Chad Connelly, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, adding that legislation could find support if it involved better border security and assimilation measures.

"I've heard some people say this is more like 'earnesty' than 'amnesty. 'Earnesty,' as in earning their way to citizenship," he added.

TripIt Travel Organizer Free (for Android)

Booking a flight is as easy as clicking your mouse or tapping your screen, but doing so still generates an irritating amount of confirmation numbers, reservation numbers, and so on. TripIt Travel Organizer Free (free) aims to cut through the clutter with a dead-simple app for storing all your necessary travel information right on your phone. I previously reviewed the Tripit for iOS, and it was fine, but on Android it truly shines.

In order to get your travel information, users forward confirmation emails to a special TripIt email address. This works not only with flight information, but hotel, restaurant, rental car, and other reservations as well. You can also provide TripIt with your email account's username and password and the system with "automagically" hoover your upcoming trip information and push it to the app. Paranoid users may not want to grant a service that much access, but using an application-specific password with Gmail works just fine.

Users can also manually enter flight information into the app, or on the website, but the dead-simple importing process is great and, really, half the product.

Where The Magic Happens
Once it has your travel information, TripIt organizes the details of your trips and places them on your phone for offline access. At the very top of the homescreen, the app displays "what's next" in your travel plan as well as when and where that happens. Tapping this will pull up more information about the next step in your journey, such as flight departure time and gate information. TripIt also ties into Google Maps on Android, providing maps of the surrounding areas in addition to the app's own maps of airport terminals.

TripIt also sports some collaboration options, allowing you and other travelers to edit a single itinerary. You can also send their itinerary to other people (like the poor rube picking them up from the airport) with a tap, saving you the trouble of sorting out which information to send whom.

Appearance Is Everything
When I reviewed TripIt Travel Organizer for iOS and was disappointed that the app was so drab and uninspired. On the Samsung Galaxy SIII, the Android version takes full advantage of the phone's large, bright screen and delivers a clean interface that surpasses the iOS version's cramped design. Some of the controls assigned to the menu button and onscreen buttons are a little unintuitive, but that kind of unpredictability seems to be part and parcel of the Android experience.

On the Nexus 7?tablet, TripIt really comes into its own?especially when viewed in landscape mode. You don't lose your place as bright, spacious panels slide from right to left at a touch. When it displays navigation information, big Google-powered Maps fill the screen. It's a solid design, and my only complaint is that the app doesn't support left and right swiping instead forcing users to use the device's back-button.

TripIt offers four tiers of interaction for users. Users uninterested in spending any money can use TripIt's core functionality for free with an ad-supported version of the app. TripIt also offers an ad-free version for $3.99. There's also a corporate-level, where companies can use TripIt to manage travel information for an entire business. Business travelers can also take advantage of TripIt's close integration with SmartExpense, to quickly and easily produce and expense report.

The Pro Problem
TripIt also offers a Pro membership for $48.99 per year, which can be purchased from inside the app or through TripIt's website. With a Pro membership, users can receive flight status information in real-time; track frequent-flier points and other travel-related rewards systems; and alternate flight suggestions should you need them. Pro users can also have travel updates pushed to a list of individuals automatically, so the rube who picks you up from the airport will be informed that your flight is delayed while you're still in the air.

The Pro membership is clearly the thrust of TripIt's business, as both versions of the app retain all the Pro-only icons. Most of these are clearly marked, and clicking on them will pull up an ad to upgrade your account. However, there are many Pro-only options and constantly being prodded toward signing up for an expensive membership can be extremely irritating.

It's important to recognize that while TripIt brings a lot to the table, there's a lot of things it won't do. For instance, it doesn't store scannable boarding passes, though you can check-in for your flight if you are a Pro user. It also won't make travel arrangements for you. If you?re organizing a new trip manually, you'll need to have already made your plans. Even the alternate flights option for Pro users will only provide you with times, flight numbers, and a phone number to rebook yourself.

TripIt does, however, add some features through its partnership with other app developers.

At its core, TripIt is basically a digital wallet with some nice extras. The Pro membership is certainly not worth it unless you are a frequent traveler, given the price and the tools it provides. That's not to undercut the app or the service, because simply having that peace of mind and ease of access can certainly take the edge off traveling. If you need a dead-simple way to organize your travel plans, TripIt delivers.

Dear HN: Let's stop with the eBook stuff - Hacker News

I came to HN because I was interested in how people were using technology to do something interesting for themselves and others. Not math puzzles, or clever programming hacks, or ruminations on various celebrities. This is "making stuff people want"

"Making stuff people want" is a broad mandate. If you can show me new and applicable information about people making money on e-books, I want to see it. If one guy is leveraging Amazon Mechanical Turk to solve CAPCHTAs for gamers, I'm interested. If Chinese firms are selling time levelling up characters for rich westerners, I'd like to know about it.

So as long as HN has articles about people making stuff other people want -- how they decided what to make, how they marketed it, how they worked closely with the target market, and so on -- count me in. I love Erlang Innards as much as the next guy, but after years of reading tons and tons of minutiae around technology, I'd like to see a bit of deeper analysis about how to do something useful with my life, not fluffy nerd candy about whether Haskell is exactly as fast as C or not.

That's my opinion. It's much different than yours, and it's much different than many others, I suspect. This is why we have a voting system, no?

-----

I respectfully disagree with your assertion for the following reasons:

1) While this may be called "hacker" news, there are a great deal of discussions that are about things that hackers are interested in that don't necessarily pertain to hacking.

2) This site is undeniably linked to technological entrepreneurship. eBooks, particularly when they cover something technical, are not only relevant, but the way in which you can make money with them are akin to being able to put together a good website and make money from it.

3) It's not at all uncommon for folks who have worked in the startup business to release or write an eBook. Many things they learn in the process can be applicable to things that are not bookseller related.

In short: this is a site for hackers, not about hacking. There are many other forums out there for such things.

-----

The site is Hacker News - not Programmer News. I understand that there is obviously a strong lean towards programming when thinking of hacking, but hacking can apply to broader topics than just programming. A lot of people are interested in eBooks and marketing and if the post helps you think about those things in a new manner and "hack" the methods of writing, publishing, and marketing your eBook, then I think it's a valid thing to post. If you check out the guidelines for posts on HN, you will see:

"Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity."

I think that a lot of these posts will satisfy a ton of people's intellectual curiosity. If it didn't, why would it make it to the front page in the first place?

Not to mention that if you extrapolate some of the ideas found in these sorts of posts, you could potentially apply them to things like programming and startups. Seems like a beneficial thing to me to have on the site.

I won't go into whether or not some of these posts are that well written or that incisive, but I think a lot of people would agree that they belong here.

-----

I'm not a programmer, though I have some knowledge of programming.

I do think I have a hacker's mindset. That's why I read this site.

When I've posted comments explaining how I created my sidebusiness self publishing books, they've been well received. People here want to know about it.

I make around $1,000 per month in physical and ebook sales. The way I've done it could easily be replicated in a technical field. And from what I've gathered, how to do it is not common knowledge.

So while it's not programming per se, I don't think this site is about programming.

-------------------------------

How I Did It

Since I've alluded to how I've done it, I'll give a top level overview. My book is Hacking The LSAT. Irrelevant to almost everyone here, highly relevant to law school applicants.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0988127903

Createspace allows you to easily publish a physical book on amazon, and keep around 35% of the print price, before discount.

Lightning source lets you sell on other sites such as Barnes and noble, and potentially cause amazon to discount your book.

ELance let me find outsourcers to proofread, format and design my books.

Blogs in your niche are good potential affiliate partners. About 50% of my revenue comes from one affiliate blog.

Relevant forums are a great marketing venue. Hacker News and subreddits may be one of them. Make useful contributions. I created the lsat subreddit, and have an ongoing ask me anything at the other main lsat forum.

While writing, the internet is not your friend. Consider disabling it while writing. I did this for a month by moving to a country without Internet, and my productivity increase 50% (measured in good words written)

Reviews are important on amazon. Give away review copies, and ask people to write honest reviews.

All of this only works if you write a good book. Consider doing it, a good book or e-book can reall set you sort in your niche, even if it's self published.

I haven't gone deep into cross formatting, but calibre is a great conversion program, and liber writer does formatting for kindle. If publishing a kindle book, buy a kindle to test it. Kindle formatting is finicky.

-----

Was it? I didn't mean it that way. The first part or the second part?

I just wanted to show that the community has found such discussions valuable in the past, how it can be done, and what kind of results you can get even from a mid ranked book in a small niche.

-----

No, I didn't. Normally I'm pretty self aware, but we all have our gaping blind spots. No need to be rude.

I can just delete the comment if the whole thing reeks of self promotion.

edit: I typed it out on my phone, which makes it very hard to review the whole thing.

-----

Whether or not an article gets on the front page (or close) depends on whether the herd vote enough for that article, you have a method to determine that, called a vote.

After all, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

-----

>>>I'd prefer that spot on the top list to be about programming or something closely related

Now wait a minute. It's people who are putting it up there. Do we have the right to vote or not? And there are lessons in selling eBooks that can be applied to other things too.

-----

Before the internet, before the PC, before even ENIAC, there were writers who made money writing what sold rather than literature. They were considered hacks.

The quintessential person banging away at a keyboard is a writer not a programmer.

-----

hacking: present participle of hack (Verb)
    1. Cut with rough or heavy blows. 2. Ride a horse for pleasure or exercise.

-----

HN has a voting system, so what appears on the front page are articles HN readers want or find interesting.

If you have a problem with a front page article, you should know that some people found it interesting and that after all, you can't agree with everybody on HN.

What you are suggesting is a matt2000'ing of HN. (matt2000 being your username.)

Support for Japan's Abe government rises to two-thirds: poll

TOKYO (Reuters) - Support for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government rose by 4.7 percentage points to two-thirds of voters in the month since his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) returned to power, a poll by the Kyodo news agency showed on Sunday.

The poll, conducted on Saturday and Sunday, showed that support for the government rose to 66.7 percent, an apparent sign of approval for his efforts to boost the economy with a mix of easy monetary policy and fiscal spending.

The rise came after the Bank of Japan announced on Tuesday its most determined effort yet to end years of economic stagnation, saying it would switch to an open-ended commitment to buying assets next year and double its inflation target to 2 percent under pressure from Abe.

Ahead of an election to the upper house in summer, 37.2 percent of respondents said they would vote for the LDP, followed by 12.1 percent for the nationalist Japan Restoration Party (JRP) led by a former Tokyo governor. The Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), ousted in last month's lower house election, stood at 8.8 percent.

The poll showed 62.0 percent supporting the Bank of Japan's 2 percent inflation target and 63.3 percent backing the government's handling of the Algeria hostage crisis, in which 10 Japanese nationals were killed.

Abe has made clear he hopes to become Japan's first long-term leader since Junichiro Koizumi's rare 2001-2006 term. The country was led by five different prime ministers in the five years up to the defeat last month of the DPJ's Yoshihiko Noda.

Chameleon star baffles astronomers

Friday, January 25, 2013

Pulsars?tiny spinning stars, heavier than the sun and smaller than a city?have puzzled scientists since they were discovered in 1967.

Now, new observations by an international team, including University of Vermont astrophysicist Joanna Rankin, make these bizarre stars even more puzzling.

The scientists identified a pulsar that is able to dramatically change the way in which it shines. In just a few seconds, the star can quiet its radio waves while at the same time it makes its X-ray emissions much brighter.

The research "challenges all proposed pulsar emission theories," the team writes in the January 25, 2013 edition of the journal Science and reopens a decades-old debate about how these stars work.

Like the universe's most powerful lighthouses, pulsars shine beams of radio waves and other radiation for trillions of miles. As these highly magnetized neutron stars rapidly rotate, a pair of beams sweeps by, appearing as flashes or pulses in telescopes on Earth.

Using a satellite X-ray telescope, coordinated with two radio telescopes on the ground, the team observed a pulsar that was previously known to flip on and off every few hours between strong (or "bright") radio emissions and weak (or "quiet") radio emissions.

Monitoring simultaneously in X-rays and radio waves, the team revealed that this pulsar exhibits the same behaviour, but in reverse, when observed at X-ray wavelengths.

This is the first time that a switching X-ray emission has been detected from a pulsar.

Flipping between these two extreme states?one dominated by X-ray pulses, the other by a highly organized pattern of radio pulses?" "was very surprising," says Rankin.

"As well as brightening in the X-rays we discovered that the X-ray emission also shows pulses, something not seen when the radio emission is bright," said Rankin, who spearheaded the radio observations. "This was completely unexpected."

No current model of pulsars is able to explain this switching behavior. All theories to date suggest that X-ray emissions would follow radio emissions. Instead, the new observations show the opposite. "The basic physics of a pulsar have never been solved," Rankin says.

The research was conceived by a small team then working at the University of Amsterdam, including UVM's Rankin, who has studied this pulsar, known as PSR B0943+10, for more than a decade; Wim Hermsen from SRON, the Netherlands Institute for Space Research in Utrecht, and the lead author on the new paper; Ben Stappers from the University of Manchester, UK; and Geoff Wright from Sussex University, UK.

These researchers were joined by colleagues from institutions around the world to conduct simultaneous observations with the European Space Agency's X-ray satellite, XMM-Newton, and two radio telescopes, the Giant Meter Wave Telescope (GMRT) in India and the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) in the Netherlands, to reveal this pulsar's so-far unique behavior.

"There is a general agreement about the origin of the radio emission from pulsars: it is caused by highly energetic electrons, positrons and ions moving along the field lines of the pulsar's magnetic field," explains Wim Hermsen.

"How exactly the particles are stripped off the neutron star's surface and accelerated to such high energy, however, is still largely unclear," he adds.

By studying the emission from the pulsar at different wavelengths, the team's study had been designed to discover which of various possible physical processes take place in the vicinity of the magnetic poles of pulsars.

Instead of narrowing down the possible mechanisms suggested by theory, however, the results of the team's observing campaign challenge all existing models for pulsar emission. Few astronomical objects are as baffling as pulsars and despite nearly fifty years of study they continue to defy theorists' best efforts.

Of the more than 2000 pulsars discovered to date, a number of them have erratic behavior, with emissions that can become weak or disappear in a matter of seconds but then suddenly return minutes or hours later.

B0943+10 is one of these erratic stars. Discovered at Pushchino Radio Astronomical Observatory near Moscow, "this star has two very different personalities," that were uncovered by Svetlana Suleymanova in the 1980's, says Rankin.

"But we're still in the dark about what causes this, and other pulsars, to switch modes," Rankin says. "We just don't know."

"But the fact that the pulsar keeps memory of its previous state and goes back to it," says Hermsen, "suggests that it must be something fundamental."

Recent studies indicate that the switch between "radio-bright" and "radio-quiet" states is correlated to the pulsar's dynamics. As pulsars rotate, their spinning period slows down gradually, and in some cases the slow-down process has been observed to accelerate and slow down again, in conjunction with the pulsar switching between bright and quiet states.

This correlation between a pulsar's rotation and its emission has led astronomers to wonder about a connection between the star's surface and the much-larger surrounding magnetosphere, which may extend up for 30,000 miles.

These new observations "strongly suggests that a temporary 'hotspot' appears close to the pulsar's magnetic pole which switches on and off with the change of state," said Geoff Wright one of the team's astronomers from the University of Sussex.

But the new results also suggest that something in the whole magnetosphere is changing suddenly and not just at the poles or other hotspots. "Something is happening globally," Rankin says, across the whole star.

In order for the radio emission to vary so radically on the short timescales observed, the pulsar's global environment must undergo a very rapid ? and reversible ? transformation.

"If that is true, it means the entire magnetosphere is alive and connected in very important ways," Rankin says, allowing a change in the pulsar's basic mode of shining in about one second, less time than it takes it to spin once on its axis.

"Since the switch between a pulsar's bright and quiet states links phenomena that occur on local and global scales, a thorough understanding of this process could clarify several aspects of pulsar physics," says Hermsen. "Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to explain it."

The team planned to search for the same pattern in X-rays that has been observed in radio waves ? to investigate what causes this switching behavior. They chose as their subject PSR B0943+10, a pulsar that is well known for its switching behavior at radio wavelengths and for its X-ray emission, which is brighter than might be expected for its age.

"Young pulsars shine brightly in X-rays because the surface of the neutron star is still very hot. But PSR B0943+10 is five million years old, which is relatively old for a pulsar: the neutron star's surface has cooled down by then," explains Hermsen.

Astronomers know of only a handful of old pulsars that shine in X-rays and believe that this emission comes from the magnetic poles ? the sites on the neutron star's surface where the acceleration of charged particles is triggered. "We think that, from the polar caps, accelerated particles either move outwards to the magnetosphere, where they produce radio emission, or inwards, bombarding the polar caps and creating X-ray emitting hot-spots," Hermsen adds.

There are two main models that describe these processes, depending on whether the electric and magnetic fields at play allow charged particles to escape freely from the neutron star's surface. In both cases, it has been argued that the emission of X-rays follows that of radio waves.

Monitoring the pulsar in X-rays and radio waves at the same time, the astronomers hoped to be able to discern between the two models.

"The X-ray emission of pulsar PSR B0943+10 beautifully mirrors the switches that are seen at radio wavelengths but, to our surprise, the correlation between these two emissions appears to be inverse: when the source is at its brightest in radio waves, it reaches its faintest in X-rays, and vice versa," says Hermsen.

The new data also show that the source pulsates in X-rays only during the X-ray-bright phase ? which corresponds to the quiet state at radio wavelengths. During this phase, the X-ray emission appears to be the sum of two components: a pulsating component consisting of thermal X-rays, which is seen to switch off during the X-ray-quiet phase, and a persistent one consisting of non-thermal X-rays.

Neither of the leading models for pulsar emission predicts such behavior.

In the second half of 2013 the team plans to repeat the same study for another pulsar, PSR B1822+09, which exhibits similar radio emission properties but with a different geometry.

In the meantime, these observations will keep theoretical astrophysicists busy investigating possible physical mechanisms that could cause the sudden and drastic changes to the pulsar's entire magnetosphere and result in such a curious flip in how they shine.
