News in Brief: TV watching linked to low sperm counts

Couch potatoes? reproductive health may suffer

Men who watch a lot of television have lower sperm counts than those who don?t watch any, researchers report February 4 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Sperm count is an informal term that refers to the concentration of sperm in a given volume of semen.

Researchers gave questionnaires to 189 healthy young men and analyzed their semen. Respondents who watched more than 20 hours of TV per week had 44 percent lower sperm counts than those who didn?t watch any. The team, led by Audrey Gaskins and Jorge Chavarro of the Harvard School of Public Health, also found that men who spent the most time doing moderate to vigorous physical exercise had 73 percent higher sperm counts than did the men who were least active.

While the findings don?t spell out an explanation for these differences, the authors cite the broad physiological benefits of exercise. Cooler scrotal temperatures have been linked to a higher sperm count, and that sedentary positions and certain exercises such as bicycling have been linked to higher scrotal temperatures.

Using single quantum dots to probe nanowires

Feb. 5, 2013 ? Modern telecommunications happens because of fast electrons and fast photons. Can it get better? Can Moore's law -- the doubling of computing power ever 18 months or so -- be sustained? Can the compactness (nm-scale components) of electronics be combined with the speed of photonics? Well, one such hybrid approach is being explored at the Joint Quantum Institute, where scientists bring together three marvelous physics research fields: microfluidics, quantum dots, and plasmonics to probe and study optical nanostructures with spatial accuracy as fine as 12 nm.

Plasmonics

When light strikes a strip of metal an electron wave can be excited in the surface. Is this "surface plasmon" a bit of light or electricity. Well, it's a bit of both. The wavelength of this electromagnetic wave is shorter and the energy density higher than that of the incoming laser light; the plasmon is thus tightly localized light constrained to propagate along the meal surface. The science of "plasmonics" has arisen to capitalize on various imaging, sensing, and processing abilities inherent in plasmons. To start with, though, one needs to know exactly what happens at that laser-excited metallic surface. That light is converted into the plasmonic wave; later the energy can be reconverted into light.

Here's where the JQI experiment comes in. The main result of the work, published February 5 in the journal Nature Communications, is to provide a map showing how the metal strip, in this case a silver wire 4 microns long and 100 nm wide, lights up.

Microfluidics and Quantum Dots

The other two chief components of the experiment, in addition to plasmonics, are microfluidics and quantum dots. Microfluidics, a relatively new science all by itself, features the movement of nanoliter volumes of fluids through channels defined on microchips, analogous to the conducting paths strung across microprocessors for carrying electrical currents. Quantum dots, nanometer-sized semiconductor balls, are tailored to possess a specified set of allowed energy states; in effect the dots are artificial atoms that can be moved around. In the JQI experiment the 10-nm-wide dots (the important cadmium-selenide layer is only 3 nm thick) float in a fluid whose flow can be controlled by varying an applied voltage. The dots are drawn up close to the nanowire as if they were mines next to a submarine.

Indeed the dot is there precisely to excite the wire. The dot is fluorescence machine -- in a loose sense a nanoscopic lightbulb. Striking it with green laser light, it quickly re-emits red light (one photon at a time), and it is this radiation which excites waves in the nearby wire, which acts like an antenna. But the interaction is a two-way street; the dot's emissions will vary depending on where along the length of the wire it is; the end of the wire (like any pointy lightning rod on a barn) is where electrical fields are highest and this attracts the most emission from the dot.

A CCD camera captures light coming from the dots and from the wire. The camera qualities, the optical properties of the dot, the careful positioning of the dot, and the shape and purity of the nanowire combine to provide an image of the electric field intensity of the nanowire with 12-nm accuracy. The intensity map shows that the input red light from the quantum dot (wavelength of 620 nm) has effectively been transformed into a plasmonic wavelength of 320 nm.

Chad Ropp is a graduate student working on the project and the lead author on the paper. "Plasmonic maps have been resolved before, but the quantum mechanical interactions with a single emitter have not, and not with this degree of accuracy," said Ropp.

Possible Applications

In an actual device, the quantum dot could be replaced by a bio-particle which could be identified through the nanowire's observed effect on particle's emissions. Or the dot-wire duo could be combined in various configurations as plasmonic equivalents of electronic circuit components. Other uses for this kind of nanowire setup might exploit the high energy density in the plasmonic state to support nonlinear effects. This could enable the nanowire-dot combination to operate as an optical transistor.

25 arrested as 49ers fans drown their sorrows

San Francisco police reported minor flare-ups of violence in the Mission District as disappointed San Francisco 49ers fans reacted to their team's loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday during the Super Bowl.

A few people threw bottles at police officers around 24th and Mission streets and 16th and Mission streets following the 49ers 34-31? loss, according to Officer Carlos Manfredi. And as of 10 p.m., police had arrested 25 people, mostly for being drunk.

Police were doing their best to prevent more major calamities; they shut down parts of the Mission to stop cars from cruising and parking, and street sweepers cleaned up any potential fire hazards.

"I think they're doing a great job," said Shanah Ucan of San Francisco. "People are safe, people who want to come out and enjoy what's happening."

The city was much calmer than when the San Francisco Giants won the World Series in October. Back then, several vandals took to the streets, setting fires, breaking windows and torching a Muni bus.

For the Super Bowl, Mayor Ed Lee had worked with police, fire and bar owners to prevent such mayhem from happening on the streets in San Francisco, even asking patrons to not serve hard alcohol and cut customers off if they were getting too drunk.

"It's nowhere compared to the Giants," Manfredi said.

Elsewhere in the city, in neighborhoods such as the Haight? Ashbury, fans reported a somber mood but no violence. Although in some part of the city, residents felt the need to set off some fireworks, despite the loss.

Examining Gottacon's Growth | Video Game Blog, Video Games ...

Gottacon has become Vancouver Island?s destination for all things gaming-related. This year marks its 5th. Taking a cue from a six-sided die, their logo stands for equal emphasis on trading card games, role-playing, board, video, minis and panels. But is it?

On-site, attendees may see more videogame and trading card tournaments going on. But on the sidelines are Warhammer miniature battle recreations worthy of the battles wrought within the land of Mordor. But one does not simply walk into this convention without knowing what to expect.

First timers and curiosity seekers can find free-to-try events to participate in. But it?s best to make the most of the entire day here than just one afternoon. Seasoned videogamers will find plenty of tournaments like HALO 4. Call of Duty and Starcraft to engage in (at a fee) all weekend long, and each of them by itself can take up half the day. At the very back of the venue, a variety of consoles, from the classic NES to XBox360 were available for anyone to play old or current games. A Wii U might have been somewhere, but that was hard to tell in the darkened section of the arena. Gottacon is not about exhibiting new products, but about bringing people together and building communities.

Sadly, with panels happening at the same time, even a former guest speaker from years ago noted the difficulties in what an attendant should do?can enough people leave a slotted event to go to a presentation about the History of Dungeons and Dragons?

Also strangely out of place is the small Role Playing Games corner. In a gaming convention, people are more often here to play games than to listen to people speaking. Sometimes listening is difficult, especially for those hearing-impaired gamers. When the venue is technically an arena, the metal will act like more of a sound reflector than absorber.

While not many reporters have attended these shows catering to pop culture, this experienced individual thinks there are still a few bugs to deal with. Behind the scenes, a lot of work was spent to make sure the shows are successful, but sometimes a few shortcomings often get ignored. Searching for a way to dampen the sound or maybe moving a few parts of the show away from one centralized space will be required.

Maybe the event listing should be slimmed down so all the items tabled get decent filling. What can be nice is to have a fair-sized allotment of tickets and number of open seats in slotted events for people deciding to go to Gottacon last minute.

This event does not compete with the Victoria Film Festival that occurs at the same time. Gottacon 2012 had a little cross marketing with the BC premiere of Lloyd the Conquer, a comedy about Live Action Role Playing, but how many gamers decided to leave the cozy space just to make a 10 minute trip downtown for the film showing, and return? Each event caters to a specific niche, and to convince Renaissance men or women to focus on one item for a day rarely happens.

People hoping for educational games for young ones to play with are limited to stirring the imagination courtesy of the Victoria LEGO User?s Group. People growing up with this product may well find careers in engineering or artistic endeavors. With other gaming products, mathematicians and strategists may emerge. As for what Gottacon can become as a regular fixture in the Pacific Northwest will depend on the planning.

Assad does not need Iranian fighters: Iranian Foreign Minister

BERLIN (Reuters) - Syria's government has no need of foreign fighters to quell an uprising against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Monday.

"The army of Syria is big enough, they do not need fighters from outside," Salehi told a conference in Berlin when asked if Tehran was providing military assistance to Assad.

"We are giving them (Assad's government) economic support, we are sending gasoline, we are sending wheat. We are trying to send electricity to them through Iraq, we have not been successful," he added.

Iran is Assad's main ally along with Russia.

On the air, Bertrand has been a sort of a pet-lover's nemesis, even in this interview suggesting that if you love pets you may not love people so much. Here's a clearly intelligent and well-read guy who believes that dogs and cats have a continuing feud. I talk a bit about misconceptions of dominance as well. Still, I must concede I enjoyed the banter with one of Chicago's most well-known and well-regarded radio personalities.
